B17 over Old Sarum Airfield, near Salisbury
This American heavy bomber is contemporaneous with the British equivalent second world war four-engine bomber, the Lancaster. The example seen here is painted in the livery of the 'Memphis Belle' made immortal in the eponymous film in which it had a starring role. It is in fact the 'Sally B' http://www.sallyb.org.uk/index.htm During WWII the B17 fleet was often seen together with the P51 long range fighter Image

WWI aircraft over Old Sarum Airfield, near Salisbury
One of the features of this year's air show was a re-enactment of a typical dogfight of the sort that might have occurred over the Western Front in France or Belgium during the Great War. Here, a British biplane is being harried by a German triplane.

P51 Mustang over Old Sarum Airfield, near Salisbury
The American fighter arrived during the second world war later than the beloved Spitfires and Hurricanes to fight for the Allies against Nazi Germany but was no less effective. Equipped with long range fuel tanks it was able to defend Allied bomber forces all the way to Germany and back reducing losses and increasing bomber efficiency. 'Ferocious Frankie' appeared in the film 'Memphis Belle' along with the B17 'Sally B' Image
