Shepherd's Close and Front Railings
The mid-18th C house is Grade II listed with English Heritage Building ID: 321586. Included in the listing are 'iron railings, alternating hooped and spear headed rails, with anthemion finials to stanchions. The rather fine holm-oak (Quercus ilex) is not included but, as the species was introduced from the Mediterranean region in the 16th C. may be contemporary with the house. The ancient word holm refers to its holly-like evergreen foliage as does ilex in its botanical epithet.
