Donkey weather vane, Vernham Dean
For centuries weathervanes have kept people in touch with the elements, signalling those shifts in the wind, which bring changes in the weather. This simple device has grown into a charming English tradition which can say something about their owners, adding interest to the landscape.

Former council houses, Vernham Dean
Every village has their rather obvious 1950s or 1960s council housing. Most are now in private ownership and the owners of these have done their best to make them look attractive by taking a pride in the gardens. The nearer ones both seem to be a window short upstairs.

This is a typical thatched cottage for the area, being built of brick and flint, the latter being abundant in the chalky soil. The white house was once one of the 3 village pubs and still retains its original malt kiln.

The George pub, Vernham Dean
Situated in the heart of the village of Vernham Dean the pub was once thatched. The name Vernham Dean is a corruption of Fernham meaning a hamlet (or village) set amongst the ferns which still grow in abundance at the road side. Dean means a wooded valley.
