Footbridge over the River Itchen, near The Soke
A pleasant footpath follows the River Itchen to the east of Winchester city centre. This view, slightly to the north of Image, shows a footbridge at a bend in the river with St Giles's Hill behind (right). Image shows the river slightly further north

River Itchen at Wharf Hill, Winchester
River levels are high following heavy rainfall in early 2014. The footpath to the left of the picture was closed when this picture was taken and appeared to have been flooded recently.

River Itchen, Wharf Hill
The River Itchen flows in several different channels through the city of Winchester, some of which come close enough to Winchester Cathedral to have caused serious problems to the building's foundations in earlier years. The main channel flows through Winchester City Mill and to the east of the city's Roman walls, along a promenaded reach known as 'The Weirs', towards Wharf Hill.

Winchester, The Black Boy
A quirky freehouse on Wharf Hill. Internally, central bar with drinking and eating areas on three sides, wooden beams, Oriental rugs on floors, log fire, eclectic collections including pipes and miniatures; a small outside terrace. Cask ales on offer at my visit: Bowman Swift One, Cottage Golden Arrow, Flower Pots Bitter, Hopback Summer Lightning, Ringwood Best. It has been suggested that the name derives from coalyard workers at the nearby former canal wharf. For some customer comments, see http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/27/2748/Black_Boy/Winchester
