8 College Street
This is a private house adjacent to Winchester College. But many people stop here and photograph it. Why? because it is the house where Jane Austen died, on 18th July 1817. She had become ill in early 1817 and in late May she, accompanied by her sister Cassandra, came to Winchester to seek medical help from a Dr Lyford. To no avail, she died here seven weeks later, aged just 41. She is buried in Winchester cathedral; although she was not famous at the time her brother had ecclesiastical connections.

'Jane Austen House', 8 College Street, Winchester
Jane Austen came to Winchester on 24 May 1817, gravely ill with what is now believed to have been Addison's disease, to be attended by Giles-King Lyford, surgeon at the Winchester county hospital. She stayed in this house on College Street, adjacent to Winchester College (see Image). She died here on 18 July, aged 41, and is buried in the cathedral. The house is listed at grade II* and dates from the late 18th century. Despite the appearance of the 'Jane Austen House' in all the tourist guides, it is a private house with no visitor access.
