This is a private house adjacent to Winchester College. But many people stop here and photograph it. Why? because it is the house where Jane Austen died, on 18th July 1817. She had become ill in early 1817 and in late May she, accompanied by her sister Cassandra, came to Winchester to seek medical help from a Dr Lyford. To no avail, she died here seven weeks later, aged just 41. She is buried in Winchester cathedral; although she was not famous at the time her brother had ecclesiastical connections.
