Southampton Common, The Cowherds
Historic inn on The Avenue, overlooking Southampton Common. Internally, back bar left, with drinking and eating areas front and right; some exposed beams, quarry tiles and stone floors, garden, games machine. Cask ales on offer at my visit: Kelburn Red Smiddy, Ringwood Best, Wadworth 6X. The pub is named after municipal cowherds who lodged here when the common was used for grazing. Blocked section of Alma Road, looking into Gordon Avenue
The brick planter in the road provides an effective vehicle barrier and prevents motorists using this as a shortcut between the surrounding busy roads.
