Channels Farmhouse
In Channels Farm Road, Swaythling, tucked away from the main A27 is an ancient thatched farm house, dating from the 1500s or 1600s. Richard Channell occupied the building in 1715, giving the name to the farm and house. The thatched structure was originally part of the Fleming Estate until it was sold in 1947. Subsequent development make it difficult to imagine its original rustic setting.

Low bridge on Wide Lane A27
It carries the main railway line in and out of Southampton. The scary junction with Stoneham Way A335 is densely forested with poles.

Swaythling: The Fleming Arms
The Fleming Arms is named after Sir Thomas Fleming (1544-1613) of Stoneham, at one time the Lord Chief Justice. The pub is a three storey Georgian building, much earlier than the 1903 date in the gable end of the extension at the right might suggest. There is an undated photo of the pub on the Wills Fleming Historical Trust website here http://www.willisfleming.org.uk/estates/hants_and_iow/Image:Flemingarms_sway.jpg showing it in earlier times, but certainly after the 1903 extension was built, with signage of Strong's Brewery of Romsey. The new and old photographs have both been taken from the same viewpoint across Wide Lane.
Latterly the pub became a Beefeater restaurant, but after a fire, was bought by the George Gale brewery of Horndean. The Gale's Brewery was acquired by Fuller's Brewery of Chiswick in 2005.
