Landguard Lodge and St Joseph's
Many of the brick-built semi-detached houses in Landguard Road have been turned into guest houses, and their gardens turned into parking. They are only about ten minutes' walk from the city centre. I stayed in Landguard Lodge for the first Geograph conference, and it was very comfortable.

Monkey puzzle tree in Landguard Road, Southampton
The tree is a small example of Araucaria araucana, the monkey puzzle tree, an evergreen that can grow to 40 metres (130 ft) tall with a 2 metre (nearly 7 ft) trunk diameter.

Landguard Road
What caught my eye here was the alternative gathering in Southampton on the day of the first Geograph conference - the enormous phalanx of wheelie bins outside the whitewashed house which is for sale. An object lesson in how to blight the appearance of a street. Unfortunately the contrast is such that the full horror isn't obvious in this image.
