Dubious claim on former Canute Hotel
This refers to the well-known but frequently misunderstood King Cnut and the tide incident. It seems nobody really knows where this took place, counter claims have been advanced for Bosham, Thorney Island and even Canewdon, Essex. If it was here, the peculiar tides with a dwell could have played a part. His idea was to show his courtiers that he was not all-powerful and could not prevail over God. It would have been quite smart of him to choose a time when he could appear to arrest the tide for a bit, but ultimately fail to stop it. It would then appear that he indeed had limited power over nature, just to keep his courtiers in line. Just a theory!

Formerly the Canute Castle Hotel, Southampton
Now an estate agents, and what looks like flats above. On the wall between first and second floors it says 'Near this spot A.D. 1028 Canute reproved his courtiers'. This relates to the well-known but poorly understood incident, possibly legendary, where the pious king commanded the tide to stop coming in. He was demonstrating to his over-flattering courtiers that only God, not kings, had power over the tides. Whether any god has power over the tides is a moot point, as also is the actual location of this event - several places on the south coast have made claims.
A grade II listed building from about the late 1830s.
