Southampton Terminus Station c1959
Southampton Terminus station was opened to traffic in 1840, built by the London & Southampton Railway (later the London & South Western Railway). When opened it was the main station in the town but was soon 'by-passed' by the western extension of the LSWR in 1858 and the opening of Southampton West, later Central station. Somewhat improbably, the Terminus station remained open for local services until 1966. The locomotive is one of Maunsell's 'Lord Nelson' class 30854 'Howard of Effingham'. The class was introduced by the Southern Railway in 1926 for use on continental boat trains from London Victoria but all were operating on the south western lines after the war. All were withdrawn in 1961/62, 30854 being the 2nd to go in September 1961. One of the class survives - 30850 'Lord Nelson' - which is in the national collection. The date of the photo is very speculative.
