Southampton, The London Hotel
Pub on Terminus Terrace, at the corner of Oxford Street. Externally, beautiful tilework for Forder & Co; internally, some good glasswork, central oval bar with eating and drinking areas front, left, right and outside. Internal features overwhelmed by a garish colour scheme. Pool, games machine, loud background music. Cask ales on offer at my visit: Itchen Valley Hampshire Rose, Wychwood Hobgoblin. Looking along Terminus Terrace, Southampton. An unidentified cruise liner docked at the nearby cruise terminal looms large over Union Castle House, which can be seen at the end of the street.

London Hotel detail
Florid faience/terracotta, typical of the period. See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4053051 for more information. Clearly the pub originally provided accommodation, unsurprising in view of its location opposite the original main railway station.

London Hotel, Terminus Terrace
Dated 1907 in the cartouche above the corner window. This is a fine example of terracotta work of the period, the lower floor in florid colour-glazed work, the upper floor in more restrained buff. Although not listed, the building remains virtually unaltered. See also http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4053049 The F & Co monogram on the corner may be the last surviving reference to the local brewing firm of Forder & Co, which was taken over by Brickwoods in 1925, themselves absorbed into the Whitbread empire in 1965.
