Medieval Merchant's House
An English heritage managed property at 58 French Street (so called because of all the foreign merchants that established themselves there) in Southampton. By a miracle it survived the bombing of WW2. Built Circa 1290

Building works
An area of condemned buildings between the High Street and Castle Way have been demolished. Not sure what is replacing them - either offices or yet more apartments.

French Street
It was very disappointing to see that the mediaeval merchant's house in French Street stands next to an ugly block of 1960s flats, built unsympathetically close to the historic building. There is a similar and equally inappropriate building behind the merchant's house.

The lettering on the building summarises the information I have been able to find about the firm. The building dates from 1903 and is Listed Grade II.

Eagle Warehouse from Town Quay Park
The Eagle Warehouse stands on French Street and there is a small French garden in Town Quay Park. This connection commemorates the Huguenots, French protestants who were expelled from their own country in the 17th century many of whom settled in Southampton.
