The Charlton Cat
Famous for the annual 'Duck Feast' held there. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlton,_Pewsey_Vale . Stephen Duck was a locally born poet of modest means who attracted Royal patronage, and had an annual feast endowed in his honour by Lord Palmerston.

The A342 passes The Charlton Cat
This establishment was originally called the Red Lion, later the Poores Arms (after Edward Poore, Lord of the nearby Manor of Rushall circa 18th C.). However the villagers had long known it as "The Cat", from the badly-painted lion on the original sign and this name was formally adopted in 1921. It's notable for its association with Stephen Duck, 18th century poet. The "Duck Feast", held annually at the Charlton Cat in the first week of June, commemorates his life and work. The cost is met from the rent of "Duck's Acre", a field in Rushall donated for the purpose by Lord Palmerston. N.B. signboard!
What a pity if all this charming history was consigned to the great wheelybin full of lost pubs.

Dog Rose (Rosa canina), Charlton Manor
The rose is common and widespread in this country. It makes dense mounds of slender stems. The flowers are pink or whitish, often solitary but sometimes in small groups.

Large wall with four interesting things, Charlton St Peter
From the left [east] - signpost to the village map, village noticeboard, Victorian postbox and hand-painted blue plaque. The plaque reads 'Charlton Civic Society - 007 James Bond used this DEAD LETTER DROP to contact a spy living near here in 1974'.
