Towards Vernham Dean from the eastern flank of Haydown Hill
The house on the extreme right is in Hampshire (the end of its back garden seems to be the border with Wiltshire). It is unclear from the 1:25,000 mapping whether this house is named Goudyses Gate, but it appears to form part of a hamlet called Woodside. Vernham Dean (wholly within Hampshire) nestles in the trees on the left hand side of the photograph.

Haydown Hill and Fosbury Camp from Conholt Hill
We are looking from Conholt Hill towards Haydown Hill which is 254m above sea level. At the top of the hill is the ancient iron-age fort of Fosbury Camp with its earth ramparts and field system. So steep is the valley that the normally straight Roman road from Winchester to Cirencester makes a long curved detour. This is a very rural part of Hampshire. Traditionally sheep rearing land, farming subsidies has encouraged farmers to grow cereal, despite the meagre chalky soil.

Lane from Hippenscombe
The valley bottom lane out of Hippenscombe towards Vernham Dean, at Conholt Bottom. Autumn is just being hinted at on this tree.
