Oddly a row of trees has been removed on the right along where the hedge is since 2011, the small house wasn't visible before then behind them.

The Somerset Hospital, Froxfield, Wiltshire dedication
The purpose of the hospital is a little ambiguous from the wording on this plaque but it appears to mean that it was for the widows of both clergymen and laymen.

The Somerset Hospital, Froxfield, Wiltshire
The building straddles two squares but most of it is in this one. It dates to 1694 in the reign of King William III. Two years later the infamous 'window tax' was introduced, the effect of which can be seen in the facade of this building. There's a bit more about the place here: http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getfaq.php?id=70

The Somerset Hospital, Froxfield: view east
The view is eastward along the A4 Bath Road.
The almshouses were founded by the Duchess of Somerset in 1694, and the east range of 18 bays - beyond the clock tower - dates from that time. The frontage was extended westward along the Bath Road in 1775, to a width of 37 bays in all.

Duchess of Somerset's Hospital
"This is the Somerset Hospital, which was founded in 1686 by Sarah , Duchess of Somerset, for the housing and maintenance of 30 poor widows. She was an outstanding benefactress of the 17th century helping both schools and apprentices and providing scholarships at Oxford and Cambridge. The original building here, of 1694, is about half of the present accommodation and 20 more apartments were added in 1771-73 making the 37 bay building that you see from the road. In 1813 the Rt. Hon. Thomas Bruce, Earl of Ailsebury, replaced the original chapel with the present stone one.
By that time there was accommodation for 29 widows of laymen and 19 widows of clergymen from different parts of England that were within 150 miles of London. Included were 9 places for lay widows from the manors of Froxfield, Huish and Shaw, Broad Town, Wootton Rivers and Thornhill in Wiltshire. There has always been a warden and a chaplain appointed to take services. In 1986 a total care home for 40 people was built behind the hospital where priority is given to hospital residents who can no longer look after themselves."
