Chalk-built cottage at Woolstone
Elsewhere in the country, chalk used as building stone is known as clunch, but around here I believe it's known as 'chalk-stone'. In any case, this cottage appears to be built of neatly squared-off blocks of chalk. The roof seems to be slabs of locally-quarried sedimentary rock, similar to the 'Collyweston slates' used in Northamptonshire, Rutland, and south Lincolnshire.

Shingle-hung cottage at Woolstone
The wall is shingled, the roof thatched. I was surprised to see shingle-hanging in this area - and particularly on a residential property. In my experience shingles are most often met with much further east, in Surrey and in Essex. Even there, much the most frequent use is for cladding church steeples - shingle-hanging on residential properties is rare.

Woolstone Village
This beautiful old public house is on the corner of the main street and the minor road, midway between the west and east edges in the upper half of the square. The waterfall, it would appear, is in someone's garden.

This public house is named after the famous figure of a white horse carved in the chalk of a nearby hill. The figure is thought to be well over two thousand years old.

The White Horse (1), Marsh Way, Woolstone near Faringdon, Oxon
A very old country pub dating probably from the 16th century or possibly the 17th. Originally a house but then converted into an inn. For many years it was known as the White Horse Inn, but in recent years the name has been abbreviated to the White Horse. However it still undertakes similar functions to a traditional inn, i.e. it offers accommodation, food and drink. There is a beer garden. It is an Arkell's house (Swindon based brewers), and is a Grade II listed building.
