The Elms, Highworth
One of Highworth's old back streets. Many years ago, the area was known as Puzzle Court, because there was a maze of narrow lanes and passages here. The most famous inhabitant of the area was probably Simon Iles, born somewhere near the Rose & Crown pub between 1805 & 1813, and who died sadly in the Union Workhouse at Stratton St. Margaret in 1891. He was known then, and still today, as the Highworth Dwarf, as he was only 48 inches high. He worked as a shepherd and was infamous for waking up the town each morning by crowing like a cockerel. There is much about him, and a photo, on the BBC Wiltshire website.

The Elms Methodist Chapel, The Elms, Highworth
This was originally a Primitive Methodist chapel, built about 1850 to replace an earlier one, which was too small for the congregation. A similar problem arose in the 1960's, when the congregation moved to a new church in Lechlade Road. Today the chapel is used as a hall, by Highworth Silver Threads, a social group for older people, and by other community groups. Image

The Elms Methodist Chapel date stone, The Elms, Highworth
The inscription on this date stone on the former chapel is badly weathered. However what is says is:- "The Elms Methodist Chapel A.D. 1850". On the website of the current Methodist Church in Highworth, it refers to this chapel having been opened in 1856, however this stone definitely gives a date of 1850. Image
