Industry and allotments from Kiln Lane
This is a very diverse square, with some lovely photos already taken. Here is another aspect of the area - industry and allotments adjacent to Plaum's Pit, which is just behind those trees. Taken early on a very frosty morning. The name Kiln Lane leads me to believe that there were brick kilns here in the past, the clay for the bricks presumably coming from Plaum's Pit.

Flags, Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
Typical flowers to be found on water margins all over the place. These were swaying in a moderate breeze when the image was obtained.

Azure Damselfly, Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
Told from the Common Blue Damselfly by the rugby-post shaped mark near the wing base. Damselflies hold their wing along their body at rest or out to about 45 degrees, dragonflies hold their wings at 90 degrees to their body. See http://british-dragonflies.org.uk/

Coots, Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
Feeding time. I'm not sure what it is the parents have provided; it looks like a dead fish. Whatever it was the youngsters seemed to like it.

Young coot, Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
I hadn't seen a coot chick before. This is one of three I saw with their parents. I expect its mother loves it.

Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
This large pond is a well-used facility for anglers. However, it is also an unofficial nature reserve with a varied population of water birds including moorhens, coots, swans and ducks. Also to be seen are dragonflies and damselflies. The pond is tucked away between an industrial estate, houses and allotments. I should know how it came by its name but I don't I'm afraid. It may well once have been a brickworks, or at least a claypit.

First City House, Darby Close
A unit on the Cheney Manor Industrial Estate. First City are providers of home care. With its varied windows, curved frontage and old gates, this place has quite a bit of style for a business premises.

Carp (?), Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
One of several large carp, or perhaps tench, that live in the pond. This one is well over a foot (30cm) long. The white specks on the water are from willow trees.
