Daniel Gooch House, Swindon
Rodbourne Road flats. A Guide to Swindon states that probably the most important piece of paper in Swindon's history was the letter written by Daniel Gooch to Isambard Kingdom Brunel on September 13th, 1840.
In it, Gooch, the newly-appointed 21 year old Locomotive Superintendent of the Great Western Railway, recommended that the tiny settlement of Swindon should be the site of the company's new engine works.
What would Swindon be like today if Brunel had decided not to take Gooch's advice?
