The Western Flyer, Swindon
The Western Flyer is one of a series of 'flyer' routes around Swindon - upgraded cycle paths connecting the residential suburbs with the town centre. The Western Flyer was the first to open and is seen here leading into the town centre from Iffley Road. It can also be used as a footpath avoiding any need to cross main roads.

The hole left by the removal of a gasholder has been successfully filled in http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3589890 It will probably be grassed over at some point as it looks a little bare at the moment. The land could in theory be used for some kind of development but great care would be needed as the legacies of its former use are contamination and engineering challenges. It would be hard to find a browner brownfield site.

A closer shot from the same position as this one http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3873073 illustrates the essential brownness of the site.

Access by permission. Infilling of the hole left when a gasholder was taken away last year is proceeding well.

The hole marks the location of a former gasholder. It was removed a few weeks ago.

The hole once lay beneath a gasholder. Its depth is unknown to me as I couldn't get close enough to see to the bottom.

A few months on from the last time I was here http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3589889 and the view has changed somewhat. The site is still fenced off and this photo was taken from above the locked access gate. It remains to be seen what will happen here, if anything.
