The hole left by the removal of a gasholder has been successfully filled in http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3589890 It will probably be grassed over at some point as it looks a little bare at the moment. The land could in theory be used for some kind of development but great care would be needed as the legacies of its former use are contamination and engineering challenges. It would be hard to find a browner brownfield site.
