Temperance Hotel
Corsham was home to a fairly prominent temperance hotel - the sign is just still visible between the right-hand windows. It may have originally dated from the early 1800s and was part of two adjoining buildings. They are now Grade II listed.

Classic stone
The Cotswolds have been a rich source of the sandy coloured stone seen all over the region, and since Roman times too. The stone is usually known as 'Bath' stone, from the Greater Oolitic Seam, but in the nineteenth century so much was quarried locally that it was also known as 'Corsham' stone.

The Mayo Monument, Corsham (1)
The monument in the form of a drinking fountain was erected in 1898 by public subscription to commemorate Charles Mayo, a local man of independent means whose mission in life was the doing of good works for his adopted town of Corsham (his birthplace was Tunbridge Wells). He was a councillor and, as Chairman of the Corsham Water Company, was responsible for bringing piped water to the town. Charles died on holiday in Switzerland aged 61 in 1895. The Mayo Monument, Corsham (2)
The monument described here http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1944210 is seen in its entirety. The monument, erected in 1898, had by the turn of the Millennium deteriorated somewhat and so, following the grant of monies from the Lottery Heritage Fund in 2006 was comprehensively restored. This is not the only physical reminder of the late Charles Mayo to be found in Corsham http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1943338
