Patney: Footpath near Home Farm
This footpath leads from Patney to the site of the former Patney and Chirton Junction station. This is one of those locations where the route of an historic right of way was diverted many years ago, but the new route has not yet been picked up by the Ordnance Survey. In this case the footpath is shown on the mapping running in a diagonal straight line. In practice the footpath runs due west from the road through Patney for about 100 metres before turning to the north-west. Image with the brick structure in front can be seen in the distance.

Main line to the West Country, Patney Bridge
Between the viewpoint and the footbridge once stood the Patney and Chirton railway station. You'd hardly know it now. Since it closed in 1966 barely any trace remains.

Un-named lane approaches Patney Bridge
After incidents of vehicles falling onto the railway, one can understand why parapets and bridge embankments need to be fortified but the resultant concrete structure at this point is extraordinarily ugly.

Patney: The site of the former Patney & Chirton Junction station
An up First Great Western Inter City 125 hurtles past the site of the former Patney & Chirton Junction station. The station was built to cater for passengers wishing to change to the line to Devizes, Bath and Bristol. That line and this station were victims of the Beeching cuts in the early 1960s. In the distance is Patney Bridge.

Patney & Chirton railway station (site), Wiltshire
Opened in 1900 by the Great Western Railway on what is today the line from Newbury to Taunton, this station closed in 1966. View west towards Lavington and Taunton, also Devizes. There were two parallel platforms here, with three platform faces. The former station footbridge was still extant when this image was taken, and appears to be the only surviving structure.
