There has been much housing development in Devizes in recent years. This view of some nearly new housing is seen from is from the southern end of London Road Bridge over the Kennet & Avon Canal. The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

It is rare to see such a pronounced bend on any canal.

Kennet & Avon Canal Walk at London Road Bridge No 138

The canal bridge is a Grade II listed structure with English Heritage Building ID: 431452. It dates from the early 19th C with modern alterations. It was built of brick and stone, to Rennie's standard design. The Kennet and Avon Canal was constructed between 1794-1810. John Rennie was principal engineer.

Seven miles to Beckhampton and the A4 then on to Avebury and Swindon. The lorry is crossing the bridge over the Kennet & Avon Canal. Note the red brick houses to the right, typical of the area.
