This is looking south at the Kennet & Avon canal from Brickham Bridge.
The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

Back of London Road Devizes
Back of The Trees Day Care Nursery, The Mews, London Rd, Devizes from the Kennet & Avon Canal as we passed on our Narrowboat.
The bridge in the background is Brickham Bridge No 137 and is a footbridge only linking London Road to a housing estate.

Stern wheel paddler, near Brickham Bridge, Kennet and Avon Canal
The stern wheel paddler was not an uncommon type of boat to be seen on the Kennet and Avon at the time of my 1977 visit, but more recently most of them seem to have disappeared or have been converted to a more conventional form of propulsion.
