Information board at Devizes Marina
Some thoughtful persons and bodies have put up this educational board. It synopsizes the history of the Kennet & Avon Canal which was opened in 1810 and linked Bristol with London via the River Avon, the River Kennet and the Thames with canal links between the three. The canal is 87 miles long and boasts 106 locks, 29 of them at Devizes, 1 tunnel of 502 yards and two aqueducts. During its heyday it carried coal, timber, stone and aggregates plus smaller quantities of some perishable goods. Its heyday didn't last long as we all know, due to the emergence of the railway. The canal is famous for being the route of the Devizes to Westminster race where paddlers race their kayaks and canoes against the clock and each other.
