Shane's Castle
The narrow fork of the A361 and A342 provided a similarly narrow place for a building. It is believed to be an old toll house of 1840-50 and remains one of few such in the area with castellations. Grade II listed.

Shane's Castle, Bath Road, Devizes
A grade II listed building from around 1845. Looking very like a toll house, the listed building citation does not mention this possibility. It does remark 'well built', probably prompted by the local confinement of collision damage. However, the porch part at the near end leans considerably away from the main building.

Devizes features [10]
These fine gateposts are at the entrance to The Cedars, a late 18th century, grade II* listed building.
The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.
