Devizes - Caen Hill Lock
Narrowboats moored at the top of this flight of locks.
Built in 1810 this flight of 16 successive locks is one of the most impressive on the UK’s waterways and forms part of the Devizes flight of 29 locks. They are designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument – the same level of heritage protection given to Stonehenge.

Welcome to Caen Hill Locks
This sign is alongside the towpath near lock No 44.
There are 29 locks raising the Kennet and Avon Canal 272 feet in a distance of two miles up Caen Hill near Devizes. Designed by engineer John Rennie, the sixteen locks (numbers 29 to 44) which form the steepest part are a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Caen Hill Flight, Kennet and Avon Canal
Looking down the iconic flight of 16 locks at Caen Hill. Although not arranged as a staircase, the locks are so close together that it was necessary to construct large side pounds between each lock. The locks were opened in 1810 allowing the canal to be used as a through route between the Thames and Bristol.
