This large car park in Station Road was once the site of Devizes Railway Station. Devizes was first reached by a branch line from Holt junction on the Wessex main line in 1857. The line became a through line in 1862 when the GWR Reading to Hungerford line was extended to Devizes via Pewsey. It returned to being a branch line in 1900 when the Stert to Westbury link was built. The line and all of its stations closed in 1966. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

Opened in 1857 as the terminus of a branch line from Holt, near Trowbridge, this became a through station in 1862 when the line was continued eastwards to Pewsey and Hungerford. After 1900, when the main-line was diverted via Westbury to the West Country, Devizes found itself on a railway backwater. The station closed in 1966. View east from the site of the platforms, the line having curved to the right through a tunnel under Castle Hill, towards Pans Lane Halt and Pewsey. All trace of the railway here has gone, replaced by a car park.
