Now named The Grange, number 12 Bridewell Street has a long and interesting history. Built timber framed as the bridewell or jail in 1579 it was twice rebuilt after fires in 1619 and 1630 and was refaced in brick in 1771. The building closed as a prison in 1836 and became the county police station. Later a school for ladies and in the 1880s a home for the needy. Refurbished in 1979 by the Devizes Almshouse Trust it is now five flats. Substantial late-Georgian house, c1830-40. Most of the windows, which are casements, have stepped voussoirs. Grade II listed.
