House by top lock, Devizes
A grade II listed building described as 'Circa 1830 adjacent to canal and probably built in connection with it.' There is certainly some doubt about the canal connection. It is built square with the road, not the canal, and if the date is right, built about twenty years after the canal became a through route here. It is not a typical lock keeper's cottage, but on the other hand, one would be expected at the top lock of a major flight on the canal. The right corner looks as if it had been something like a toll office.

Kennet Lock No 50, Kennet and Avon Canal, Devizes
The derelict lock as seen from Devizes Town Bridge in 1977. The name of the lock is difficult to account for, as the nearest point on the River Kennet lies many miles to the east.

Kennet and Avon Canal [26]
Seen on the Kennet and Avon Canal near Town Bridge, this brightly decorated boat was sporting a number of balloons, two of which sported the numbers 2 and 7. Someone's 27th birthday today or someone's 72nd birthday today?
The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.
