Devizes buildings [8]
The Corn Exchange, seen here from Station Road. This shows the north elevation with its long range of similar round headed windows. Dated 1857, the building now hosts flea markets and theatrical productions and operas. There is another image of the hall, seen from Market Place, at Image The hall is listed grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1250364 The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

This plaque, thanking the land girls, is affixed to the front of the Corn Exchange in The Market Place. The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

Corn Exchange, Devizes
In the Market Place on the corner of Station Road. Dated 1857, the architect was a Mr W. Hill of Leeds. A noble building built of Bath stone with Corinthian columns and pilasters and a statue of Ceres, the Roman Goddess of agriculture. Grade II listed. The building is now run by the Town Council and used for various events.
