Devizes buildings [5]
Originally built as a school in 1822, this delightful small Literary and Scientific Institute, number 53 Northgate Street, is set back from the street. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1262609 The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

Crowman Antiques, Devizes
This shop on Northgate Street claims to deal in genuine antiques, not bric-a-brac; certainly the window display looks fascinating. It has been described as selling 'quirky goods with a sense of rural history'. The business started in Pewsey in 2008 before moving to Devizes in 2013; the Crowman name does not refer to its owners but is a tribute to the scarecrows - with handmade clothes - that they used to make and sell. The building itself seems ideal for such an enterprise - it has previously been a dentist’s, a music shop and a tobacconist’s.

Devizes Literary & Scientific Institute
Located at 53 Northgate Street, set back from the road. The Wiltshire Council website states that the building dates from 1822, when it was a British School for Girls, serving the Nonconformists of the town. It was closed at short notice in 1893 in the mistaken belief that a school board was about to be formed in Devizes. The children were then accommodated in the town schools or educated in the parish rooms. In 1895 the building was handed over to the borough for a technical school and was sold in 1906.

Devizes: car wash in New Park Street
This disused filling station forecourt is now used as a car wash, and this is a customer's perspective. Across the road, we see new housing that appears to be nearing completion.

A brewery in Devizes
You won't go far without tripping over a brewery or two, be they still working or (as in this case) a former one. Whilst Wadworth's are the major employer still brewing today they don't go as far back as this site - a plaque records it as starting around 1768. Despite the narrow frontage, the buildings extend a good way back from the road.
