Crommwell Rooms and goods entrance to the Market Plaice
On Station Road, the inscription above the shuttered door explains that the retail entrance to the Market Plaice is on Market Place. The unusual spelling 'Crommwell' seems particular to the sign over the door, other references to this address use the usual spelling.

I bet they get a few chancers in there. I used to work in a school right by HMS Victory. People would come in and park, at which point our caretaker would then pop out; and close, then padlock, the gates!

The Corn Exchange, Market Place, has an imposing frontage. Constructed of Bath stone with 4 semi-engaged Corinthian columns and angle piers on a projecting plinth. These support an entablature and balustrade, with stone urns at the corners and a central statue of Ceres on a tall base. Dated 1857, the building now hosts flea markets and theatrical productions and operas. There is an image of the building seen from Station Road at Image The hall is listed grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1250364 The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

The Corn Exchange, Devizes
A grade II listed building of 1857. This view from Station Road shows its bulk, which is not so apparent from its frontage on Market Place.
