Marlow Place, Marlow
Another slice of idiosyncratic Baroque from Thomas Archer. The capitals of the angle pilasters appear to be upside down, and those of the central pilasters have inturned volutes. Brown brick with red brick dressings. The grand central window was originally the main entrance. Built c1720 for John Wallop, Viscount Lymington. Grade I listed. Archer was one of the triumvirate of great Baroque architects during the brief flowering of the style in Britain (with John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor) and he alone visited Rome which instilled in him Continental styles. I think this is now used as offices. The date of the photo is uncertain.

View of building at the southern end of Marlow High Street. Not quite in keeping with the many fine older buildings in this road.
