Grand Union Canal (Slough Arm), near Iver
A narrowboat approaches the bridge under the M25 on its way between Cowley Peachey Junction and the basin at Slough. The Slough arm runs for about five miles, is mostly straight and, in truth, not particularly interesting with limited facilities for boaters. It was a very late addition to the canal network, not opening until 1882 - by which time many canals were feeling the effects of railway competition. Nevertheless it was successful, carrying a specific traffic, bricks, from the area's brickworks into London. Carrying continued until 1960.

Concrete thingy and digital billboard
Recently cleaned-up canal embankment reveals a concrete thing - I know not what. In the background a digital billboard, with five rotating adverts to distract drivers on the M25 motorway. I selected the best of the five ads!

M25 crossing Slough Arm of Grand Union Canal
Considering that the motorway here consists of eight lanes plus a central reservation, this bridge seemed surprisingly narrow. The length of towpath beneath it is about 43 metres.

M25 bridge, Slough Arm, Grand Union Canal
If this had a canal number, it would be 2b, but it did not seem to be plated anywhere. The towpath from here on was temporarily closed because of work removing bridge 2a, a footpath and services bridge which had partially collapsed.

Beeches Way (92)
Here's a blow. The footbridge over the Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal is closed. I was told it was severely unsound and was to be removed. Heigh ho, there's a detour to take adding an extra three quarters of a mile to be trudged.
