View along the A6 as it runs through Hazel Grove towards Stockport. Hazel Grove is tricky to get through with vehicles leaving and joining the road from left and right all along the route into Stockport.

This site had been abandoned and left open for anybody to walk in. This was a long-disused horizontal cross compound mill engine built by S S Stott of Haslingden in 1903. It was installed second-hand in about 1929 and stopped about 1965. The high pressure cylinder has Corliss valves and is 12.5" bore and the low pressure has a slide valve and is 22" bore. The common stroke is 3'. The flywheel is 10' diameter. The engine was rated at 250 indicated horsepower. This view is from between the cylinders and shows the flywheel and governor. The square holes in the flywheel are for a long lever used for hand barring the engine. The fulcrum is on the rack at the bottom of the view and the kink in the handrail allows for a good swing on the bar. The section to the left of the flywheel rim is a large belt pulley for driving the mill. The governor is a centre loaded Porter-type example and adjusted the cut-off of the Corliss gear on the high pressure cylinder. This engine is now preserved and can be seen in steam at the Anson Museum in Higher Poynton. A few years ago I found myself roped into giving an informal teach in to members of the public on the valve gear whilst I was visiting the museum.

The steam (inlet) valves are at the top corners with the governor controlled trip gear between them. The exhaust valves are at the bottom corners. Top centre you can see part of the main stop valve (never a start valve) with its emergency electric stop motion. The trunk crosshead guide is to the left. This engine is now preserved and steamable at the Anson Museum in Higher Poynton.

The low pressure cylinder is on the right by the edge of the flywheel. The centre loaded governor is to Stott's own pattern. The piston tail rod to the left operated the air pump. The mill was derelict and abandoned and I walked in unchallenged three times in the space of less than three months.

The engine drove by flat belt from the pulley to the left of the flywheel. This rusty wreck is now fully restored and in steam at the Anson Museum in Poynton.

Another view of this abandoned site. It was pretty central in town but you could just walk in and be left alone.

This was owned by A A Barton, wadding manufacturers who were minded to refuse access to the steam engine in the building with the projecting lifting beam. We were passing by and called in to find the site abandoned with the gates open. A ladder was found and access gained to the horizontal cross compound mill engine therein.
