Marple Locks No 6 east of Stockport
Marple Locks No 6. Looking south towards Lock No 7, Marple Junction and Whaley Bridge. The Marple flight on the Peak Forest Canal consists of sixteen deep locks in a mile. The total fall (or rise) provided is 209ft 6in (almost 64 metres). The canal was opened to navigation by 1796 but not enough money remained to build these locks. A temporary tramway was installed and used until 1804, when the locks were completed.

Dry pound, Marple Locks, 1961
This is between locks 6 and 7, at a time when navigation was discouraged, although the actual locks were in quite good condition. This pound has either leaked away, or possibly has been deliberately drained. The latter possibility may have something to do with the condition of the side pound, which is to the right of the towpath shrouded in bushes - the ports under the path may be seen, well above the lowered water level. The side pound is on the steep side of the valley above the nearby railway line, so may have been thought dangerous. It is now reportedly disused, presumably blanked off from the canal (if the report is correct), but still holding water. The other point of interest is the cottage just showing on the left. This was Glen Cottage, and was demolished not long after this view. A painting dated to May 1963 shows it half demolished.
