Lumbhole (Grove) Mill, Kettleshulme - beam engine
This is a very rare example of a largely unspoilt in situ single cylinder beam engine that was back-up to a waterwheel in a candlewick factory. The engine is of circa 1835 vintage. The cylinder is probably a later replacement by J & E Arnfield of New Mills and is 18" x 52" with a simple slide valve. It has a single flitch cast iron beam and a cruciform section cast iron connecting rod. A classical 'Watt' conical pendulum governor operates a throttle valve. The beam entablature is supported by a single fluted cast iron column. This is the beam floor from the crank end. Note the complete absence of hand rails around the beam. This is as original. Only the engine driver would have been coming up here and the assumption was he knew how to keep safe. There were no members of the public to protect here.
The site is privately owned and there is no casual access.

The beam entablature is supported by a single fluted cast iron column. This is the beam floor at the cylinder end. This shows the nicely detailed single flitch beam. The rounded ends are fixed by a socket joint to the end of the centre piece. The parallel motion is nicely detailed. Note the complete absence of hand rails.
