Staden Lane
The no through lane on its way between business park and hamlet. On the right, a hen advertises free range eggs; close beside it is a sign for footpath HP4 54/1, which runs behind Rockhead Business Park. I say "runs" - "stumbles" would be a better word; it's not an easy path, as we discovered the following morning

Squeeze stile, Staden
And a real squeeze it is, too. This is on Buxton FP 54, a rather miserable and, from the southern end, unwaymarked affair that involves stumbling along a rubble-strewn path, the rubble having come from a collapsing adjacent wall.

Approaching Staden Low
Staden Low - an earthwork enclosure of uncertain date and function. It comprises an oval embankment with internal ditch, with a maximum external diameter of circa 58 metres. There are two entrances, one on the north-north-east and the other to the south-south-east. Suggested interpretations for the oval enclosure include a henge or an Iron Age enclosure, while a sheepfold was suggested by the Ordnance Survey. An excavation in circa 1959 recovered some animal bones, Roman pottery, brooches and some chert and flint flakes.

The Buxton branch of the DIY chain still has a few items for sale, but will shortly close for good. Another nail in the coffin in the recession of 2011...
