Hamlet above Miller's Dale, with a farm, a holiday cottage and a row of terraced cottages. The milk tanker lorry has just passed me on the lane. Snow falling heavily.

Lone chimney
This chimney stands in splendid solitude high above Miller's Dale. It probably served the factory which was built beside the river in the valley below. It made sense to build a tunnel up the hillside to a short chimney instead of building a very tall chimney. The up-draught would be excellent with such a long height gain and a tunnel was easier to build and maintain than a tall chimney would be. This also avoided down-draught problems with winds swirling around the valley sides. Similar arrangements can be seen at Crew's Hole near Bristol and in the Tamar Valley.
