Bike 'n' Hound, New Beech Street
The Bike n Hound was originally The Royal Albert commemorating Prince Albert, the Consort of Queen Victoria, who died in 1861. The beerhouse licence dates back to around 1850. The first owner and licensee was Thomas Bridge, who was there for around ten years. After 1890 the Royal Albert was bought by the Philanthropic Burial Society of Hyde. This view from New Beech Street shows the very old brick/stonework contrasting with the "newish" paintwork. Originally the doors opened into a back yard that included outside toilets. These were knocked down around the 1970s when New Beech Street was built.

In the foreground is the Bike 'n' Hound which was opened as The Royal Albert around 1850. The rear unplastered rear portion of the building originally opened into a back yard that included outside toilets. These were knocked down around the 1970s when New Beech Street was built. The building behind on the other side of Hamnett Street is the Job Centre.

Road markings on New Beech Street
The road markings outside the Bike 'n' Hound on New Beech Street clearly directs traffic to turn left into Hamnett Street. The road ahead is for buses (turning right into the bus station) and taxis (turning left into the taxi-rank) only. It seems that some motorists have been caught using it as a short cut into the Long Meadow Car Park but that involves them turning the wrong way into the one-way Clarendon Street.
