Actually the hunting lodge of James I. On his journey south from Scotland to London, after the death of Queen Elizabeth I, he stopped here to hunt for three days, and returned to Royston as often as the cares of state permitted.

Royston: once James I's hunting lodge
"Here are the remains of the Hunting Lodge which James I built for himself at Royston. What remains is a plastered cottage [now a chip shop] with overhang and then the so-called Palace, a two storey brick house with two big chimneys towards the street but the rest redone in the C18 with a shell-hooded door and a Venetian window above" (Nikolaus Pevsner).
