The Chequers was open for Christmas lunch. The Grade II listed timber building dates from 1840. The maker's plate on the Grade II listed 19th-century pump reads Appleby & Co Renishaw Ironworks Nr Chesterfield

When this picture was taken in July 2009, The Chequers had suddenly closed its doors leaving Orwell without a pub. However local residents were hopeful that it would re-open soon.

Orwell: in Chapel Orchard
Productive until the 1950s, the orchard was intended for housing when bought by the county council in the 1960s, the nearby information board explains. Following a campaign by villagers, in 2005 it became a Village Green Space on a 21-year lease. It is maintained by volunteers.
