The Guild House, Ashwell
In the High Street, next to the long frontage of St John's Guildhall (left). Pargetting is not as often seen here in north Hertfordshire as it is in Essex or Suffolk, but this little building is quite elaborately decorated, with the date 1681 appearing under the eaves - on the left.

The Guild House, Ashwell
In the High Street, next to the long frontage of St John's Guildhall (left). This little building is quite elaborately pargetted, with the date 1681 appearing under the eaves - on the left. The swirling motifs used for the largest decorated panels have a slightly menacing quality - though a close look suggests that the designs are floral. There is also what appears to be a winged dragon - the small panel above and to the left of the ground-floor window. (This may be fanciful, but to me the tangle of pargetting seems to pre-figure Art Nouveau: http://themagiclantern.tumblr.com/post/861764501/a-fragment-of-a-facade-by-architect-august-endell )
