Part of Raban Court
This large 16th century timber-framed building was once a coaching inn called 'The Talbot' inn. In 1959 a man called Raban bought the property and converted it into six houses.

Pub sign: 'The Engine', Station Road, Baldock
About 20 years ago I remember seeing a very fine steam-engine pub sign somewhere hereabouts. The engine depicted was an LNER stream-lined Pacific, in blue livery with streaming exhaust - the whole design rendered in Art Deco style, perfect for the 1930's subject. Since then I've looked for that sign a couple of times, but without success - thinking I was looking for a pub called 'The Railway'. I now suspect I got the name wrong, and that this sign has replaced the one I so much liked. For me, the current design makes far less impact, but it's still a decent job. My knowledge of the old LNER is very limited, but my guess is that the scene shown is a plausible one, historically speaking. I'd be happy to be corrected, but I reckon the engine (shown standing at Baldock station) is a B1 - otherwise known as a 'Bongo' ! For a general view of the pub, see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3544676

Baldock: The Engine
This is the pub nearest to Baldock railway station. Many pub-sign painters choose random locomotives, but this one must have done a bit of research as the LNER B1 locomotive depicted here was a type often seen on the Cambridge line at Baldock. For a closer look at the B1, see Stefan Czapski’s Image

'The Engine': pub by the old Great North Road, Baldock
The name plainly came about because this is the nearest pub to Baldock station. Part of the bridge which takes the Royston line over the old Great North Road can be seen at the right-hand edge of the picture.
