Ploughing competition.
On a cold, grey day, a ploughing competition adds a splash of colour to a drab countryside. Odd little machines like these turn up in the same field as modern monsters. Which would I rather own? Something old and quirky.

Fred and Archie.
Fred and Archie are taking part in a ploughing match. There are four other pairs of horses in the competition. The ploughman seems to have the hardest job, the horses seem to take this all in their stride.

Oughtonhead Farmhouse
A glimpse of the farmhouse from the adjacent public path. The house was built for William Lucas in 1846. Its purpose was to accommodate the Oughtonhead Farm Baliff at the time that the Lucas family had consolidated its farming holdings in the Oughtonhead and Gaping Hills area. The family had started to acquire farmland around Hitchin from 1736 but at that time the land was managed under the open field system with many scattered pieces. Various enclosure acts allowed the family to form more efficient contiguous field blocks and by the 1840s they were in a position to develop Oughtonhead as a single farm.

Farm Buildings (Holdings Farm?)
Holdings Farm is marked to the south east of the Pirton road on the OS map but I believe these buildings belong to it. On the day this photograph was taken there was a ploughing match in progress. It was cold but the old tractors and plough horses didn't seem to mind at all. Oh and the bacon butties at the catering van were good I'm told by Janis.
