Car park beside Payne's Park, Hitchin
Viewed from the grounds of Hitchin Museum, much of the car park is on the site of the yard of the Swan, a coaching inn from whence Kershaw's coach made its daily journey from Hitchin to London - just over four hours each way on a good day. The Kershaw service had been operated for 110 years by the same family but closed completely on the opening of the railway to Hitchin in 1850.

Mortar and pestle in the William Ransom Physic Garden at Hitchin
The physic garden was in the grounds of Hitchin Museum. It is named in honour of William Ransom, a Hitchin Quaker, who set up the Ransom pharmaceutical company in Hitchin in 1846. The company survives and continues to be based in Hitchin. William's story can be found here: https://www.hertfordshirelife.co.uk/people/life-times-william-ransom-hitchin-1-1641398 The museum has now moved elsewhere but the garden remains. It is maintained by members of Hitchin Historical Society but is currently closed as a result of coronavirus.

Taken from the Market Sq. end. Don't be deceived, the road is old but the cobbling was only done in the last few years.

The Arcade, Hitchin (1)
Looking east towards the High Street and the Market Place. The Arcade is said to be the product of 1920's development, and is certainly a pleasant corner of Hitchin's fine town centre.
