The Sun, Hitchin
Sun Street, Hitchin. Originally built in the 16th century, this coaching inn has played an important part in the life of the town for over 400 years. It is said that the late Queen Mother attended dances here when in her teens (her family lived near to Hitchin). More information about the inn can be found here: http://www.hitchinfolkclub.idnet.net/a%20brief%20history.html

The ex-premises of Hitchin Conservative Club, Sun Street, Hitchin
Now in the process of being converted into a Wetherspoon pub. Something of a comedown as the building has been witness to many important events in the life of Hitchin and, indeed, Britain. A photograph exists of Lord Robert Cecil addressing a large crowd from the centre top window in 1912. Cecil was one of the founders of the League of Nations after World War I. He was of the view that the reparation conditions imposed on Germany after the war were too harsh, and that Germany should have been admitted to the League. We can only surmise that subsequent world events may have been totally different had his view prevailed. He received the Nobel Peace prize in 1937 for his work with the League and he died in 1958.

The Angel Vaults, Hitchin
A Wetherspoon pub in the old Hitchin Conservative Club building in Sun Street. The name is derived from a nearby ancient hostelry which had to be demolished in the 1950s because it was found to be in a dangerous condition.
